Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal is on the cusp of making history, needing just 97 runs to become the fastest Indian to reach 2,000 Test runs. The young left-hander has the opportunity to surpass Sunil Gavaskar’s 49-year-old record when India takes on England in the second Test at Edgbaston, starting on July 2nd.
India's Yashasvi Jaiswal, looking to make history.
Jaiswal’s consistency has been a significant positive for India during a challenging transition period in Test cricket. He recently demonstrated his talent with a superb century in the first Test at Headingley. However, his impressive effort wasn't enough to prevent India from suffering a five-wicket defeat. Despite setting England a formidable target of 371 runs, India was stunned by the composed chase led by Ben Duckett, Zak Crawley, and Joe Root, giving England a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.
Team India’s Intense Nets at Edgbaston| Prep for 2nd Test vs England
Jaiswal’s individual form remains a key source of hope for India as they aim to recover at Edgbaston. In just 20 Tests, he has already amassed 1,903 runs at an impressive average of 52.86.
The current record for the fastest Indian to 2,000 Test runs is held by the legendary Sunil Gavaskar, who achieved the milestone in his 23rd Test back in 1976. Gavaskar went on to become the first cricketer to score 10,000 Test runs. Rahul Dravid and Virender Sehwag follow on the list, having reached 2,000 runs in their 25th Tests.
With his elegant strokeplay and remarkable temperament, Jaiswal has the chance to join and even outshine these legends. He can provide India with a much-needed boost in a must-win Test.
