Haddin Calls for 'Attitude Adjustment' from Gill After India's Test Loss: Fielding Woes Exposed

Following India's five-wicket loss to England in the first Test, former Australian player Brad Haddin urges captain Shubman Gill to improve the team's fielding attitude. Haddin links poor catching to the IPL and emphasizes that fielding excellence requires commitment. India dropped eight catches, costing them dearly, especially with Ben Duckett's match-winning performance.

Former Australian wicketkeeper Brad Haddin has challenged India's newly appointed Test captain, Shubman Gill, to make significant adjustments to his attitude following India's recent five-wicket loss to England in the opening Test of the Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy 2025 at Headingley.

The defeat, despite India boasting five centurions throughout the match, has largely been attributed to a substandard fielding performance. The team uncharacteristically dropped eight crucial catches across both innings, which ultimately allowed England to successfully chase down a formidable target of 371 runs.

India's fielding woes proved particularly costly regarding England's opener, Ben Duckett, who was dropped in both innings. Duckett capitalized on these errors, scoring an impressive 211 runs, including a match-winning 149 in the fourth innings. His stellar performance earned him the Player of the Match award and propelled England to a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.

"Every great team, regardless of the era, shares one defining characteristic: exceptional fielding. I believe this is a legacy Gill needs to start building within this team. He needs an attitude adjustment," Haddin stated on the Willow Talk podcast.

The former Australian wicketkeeper also highlighted potential concerns arising from the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, suggesting a correlation between the tournament and the perceived decline in catching standards.

"If you aspire to field well and consistently compete, it all boils down to attitude. You can engage in all the technical drills off the field and have access to numerous coaches, but it won't make a difference without the right mindset. Even during this year's IPL, the catching was subpar. And that could be a byproduct," Haddin elaborated.

The Indian team's disappointing fielding overshadowed their batting performance, where they managed to post competitive totals in both innings. The pace attack, despite being led by Jasprit Bumrah, struggled to make a significant impact and was further hampered by the dropped catches.

Team India is now gearing up for the second Test match scheduled to be held at Edgbaston Stadium in Birmingham from July 2-6, 2025. The team must address their fielding concerns to level the series.

England has already announced their squad for the second Test, with Ben Stokes continuing as captain. The squad includes key players such as Jofra Archer, Ben Duckett, Joe Root, and Chris Woakes, as they aim to capitalize on their lead in the series.
