Prithvi Shaw, once hailed as a future star of Indian cricket, has openly discussed the challenges and missteps that have hampered his career trajectory. In a candid interview, the 25-year-old batsman acknowledged that a combination of poor decisions, distractions, and a shifting focus led to a decline in his performance, both on and off the field.
Shaw admitted to losing sight of his priorities and making detrimental choices. "There are a lot of things. It is different for people to see. Because I know what has happened. I can understand it. I have taken a lot of wrong decisions in life. I started giving less time to cricket... I admit that there was a distraction," Shaw confessed to News24.
He elaborated on how his dedication to the sport waned over time. "I used to practice a lot. For example, I used to bat for 3-4 hours in nets. I never got tired of batting. I used to go to the ground for half a day...After that, I started considering what was not necessary as necessary. I made some wrong friends...Then they took me here and there. All those things. Then I got away from the track. I used to give 8 hours of practice on the ground. Now it is 4 hours."
Shaw burst onto the scene in 2018 with a remarkable Test debut, scoring a century against the West Indies. His talent and potential drew comparisons to legendary Indian batsmen like Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag. However, issues with discipline and fitness gradually led to his decline and eventual exclusion from the national team. His struggles culminated in being dropped by Mumbai due to fitness concerns and going unsold in the IPL 2025 auction.
Now, Shaw is determined to revitalize his career. He has severed ties with the Mumbai Cricket Association and is seeking a fresh start with Maharashtra as a professional player. In his communication with the MCA, Shaw expressed gratitude for their support but emphasized that a change of environment is crucial for his growth. While he has had fleeting moments of resurgence, such as his appearances in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, consistent performance has eluded him.
With a new team, a renewed mindset, and a willingness to confront his past mistakes, Prithvi Shaw is embarking on a journey to rebuild his cricket career. Whether this marks the beginning of a successful comeback remains uncertain, but he is committed to taking the challenging path towards redemption.
