The Asia Cup tournament is potentially moving forward. Despite previous uncertainties, a renewed sense of optimism surrounds the continental championship. This shift follows tensions between India and Pakistan.
While details are still pending, a formal decision might be reached next week. The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) hopes to release the schedule for the six-team tournament in early July, coinciding with a planned meeting.
The ACC is reportedly aiming for a mid-September start, targeting September 10 as the potential launch date for the T20 format tournament. Participating teams, aside from India and Pakistan, are expected to include Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and the UAE. Promotional activities are reportedly already underway.
The UAE remains the leading candidate to host the event. A hybrid format is also under consideration. Due to existing agreements, when India or Pakistan are scheduled to host the Asia Cup, the tournament is held at a neutral venue.
Uncertainty arose following an attack in Pahalgam in April. The situation intensified after India launched Operation Sindoor against Pakistan in May, casting doubt on the tournament. Calls for an Indian boycott of Pakistan in multi-lateral events grew. India already refrains from bilateral cricket with Pakistan. Potential discussions regarding a boycott were slated for the next ICC meeting.
However, recent developments suggest a possible shift. The International Cricket Council (ICC) released schedules for the Women's ODI World Cup in India and Sri Lanka, and the Women's T20 World Cup in England. In both tournaments, India and Pakistan are scheduled to compete.
Despite the silence from BCCI, ACC, and ICC officials, cricketing ties between the two rivals seem set to continue, at least in global events. These matches are major revenue generators for global cricket. While India and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) may not heavily rely on revenue from these encounters, governing bodies like the ICC, the ACC, and their member boards do.
