Your brain is your biggest asset, and keeping it in top shape is crucial for a healthy body and mind. No, we aren’t suggesting you take expensive supplements or a fancy diet that will cost you an arm and a leg. But how about an inexpensive way to boost your brain health? This hack, approved by a top doctor, requires no money and can improve your memory, focus, and brain health.
Dr Akshat Chadha, a General physician and health educator, has now shared two simple tricks to boost brain health. “Brain health has always been important, but with the fast-paced world we live in, which also includes overuse of gadgets, it’s become even more important. But again, who has time to help their brains, right? So, here are two easy hacks which you should include in your regular routines to hopefully improve cognition, memory, focus, and lift the brain fog covering your brain,” the doctor said.
Use your non-dominant hand
Using your non-dominant hand to do everyday activities like brushing your teeth, eating food, opening and closing doors, jars, stirring tea or coffee, drinking water, or writing, can challenge your brain.
“Doing this can be a little annoying as you won’t be good at it, but it can improve brain function by stimulating the opposite side of your brain and help enhance cognitive abilities like memory, concentration, creativity, and improve coordination,” Dr. Chadha said, in a post shared on Instagram.
Studies have consistently shown that using one's non-dominant hand can boost brain function. It is also linked to a reduction of symptoms of depression, increased self-control in the face of provocation, stress reduction, and an increase in creative thinking.
Solve a puzzle
Another great way to boost your brain health and function is to solve puzzles, Sudoku, crosswords, or play a game of solitaire. You have to engage in such activities at least twice or thrice a week.
“Avoid using your phone or any gadget to do these. Instead, buy a puzzle or puzzle book, or use a newspaper, or get a pack of cards. Solving these puzzles will not only improve your problem-solving capacity but also help you build patience,” the physician said.
10 tips to improve your brain
The doctor suggests trying to incorporate different puzzles. This will stimulate both sides of the brain, improve short-term memory, and even reduce stress. “So next time you are out shopping, pick up any puzzle or even a board game to start activating new brain pathways,” he adds.
Studies have shown that thinking games such as crossword puzzles are beneficial for aging brains. One study found that playing crossword puzzles regularly delayed memory decline by two and a half years.
